The practice of yogic sleep
Yoga Nidra or the practice of yogic sleep has similarities to the practice of sophrology. It can be a deeply restorative healing meditative practice that calms the nervous system. Over time it not only has the potential to aid sleep but can enhance a sense of well being, peace and creativity in life.Participants usually lie down comfortably on a mat with blankets and cushions to support the body, giving a sense of peace, calm, safety and wellbeing, letting the body know that it can take time to relax. This can also be done as a sitting practice if that feels more comfortable. Rest and Restore Total Yoga Nidra is a guided practice, following the sound of voice, to re-connect to different elements of the body and a sense of place within yourself.
In the Yoga Nidra I deliver, I often include elements of the seasons, using poetry and sound, including some gentle movement at the beginning of each session. It has been proven that sound vibrations combined with silences can bring on a profound sense of wellbeing within the self.
Rest and Restore Total Yoga Nidra uses elements of neuroscience and meditation and takes you on a journey through the five layers of self, called the ‘Panache Maya Koshers’, creating a re-connection to your senses and your embodied being as a whole. As well as inspiring creativity and productivity, it can improve general health and wellbeing. Through the tantric practice of expanded awareness, an awaking of your consciousness in sleep and dream states can be enabled, leading to many therapeutic benefits.
Yoga Nidra is a powerful, scientific method, based on ancient Tantric texts, of complete mental, physical and emotional relaxation.
induces your brainwaves to transition from the waking state, through the “hypnagogic” state (between waking and dream), into dream and deep sleep states.
This transition, however, is not done unconsciously. Using the tool of Yoga Nidra, the transition is done with full conscious awareness, which allows the practitioner to access layers of the subconscious mind with clarity and mindfulness.
This allows for the release of many negative patterns to unravel and with time ultimately dissolve.
